Jimmy the King: Murder, Vice, and the Reign of a Dirty Cop: summary, description and annotation

An incredible four-decade account of murder, power, and corruption in one of the countrys largest police departments
In 1979, the gruesome slaying of a thirteen-year-old boy riveted the suburbs of Suffolk County, New York. As the county hustled to bring the case to a dubious resolution, a wayward local teenager emerged with a convenient story to tell. For his cooperation, Jimmy Burke was rewarded with a job as a cop.
Thus began Burkes unlikely ascent to the top of one of the countrys largest law enforcement jurisdictions. He and a crew of likeminded allies utilized vengeance, gangster tactics, and political leverage to become the most powerful and feared figures in their suburban empire.
Until a pilfered bag of sex toys brought it all crashing down.
Jimmy the King is the story of the rise, reign, and paranoiac fall of a corrupt cop and his regimea crime family with badges and guaranteed pensions. Novelistic in detail and piercing in its political insight, this book will leave you questioning who modern policing serves, who it protects, and who it preys upon and abandons.

For Jenny and Frankie

The kids Ed ran with all became hoodlums or cops. The ones that became cops were the ones that the Church got a hook into, the ones that cooked a little bit from guilt. But they all like the same things. They all like to butt heads and loosen peoples teeth.

TOM WOLFE, BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES

Older teenage boys in packs are like dogs. Fine alone. But when they travel in packs, they feed on each other. And theres always a leader, and its very difficult for them not to go along.

EXCLUDED POTENTIAL JUROR IN JOHN PIUS MURDER RETRIAL, 1989

He taught me if youre dealing with a drunk, keep the whiskey away from him; if youre dealing with a gambler, keep the money away from him; if youre dealing with people who have weaknesses, try to keep them away from the weakness; but theres nothing, nothing in the world you can do to solve the problems of a liar.

WILLIAM ROSENBERG, TIME TO MAKE THE DONUTS

T his book is a work of nonfiction based on interviews with dozens of subjects and the review of tens of thousands of pages of records, as well as other materials. It includes descriptions of scenes and dialogue that I did not witness firsthand. Those descriptions were credibly drawn from witnesses who were privy to those events, via interviews, court testimony and filings, wiretap logs, and similar sources. Particularly in the final third of the book, the dialogue draws heavily from the testimony and filings of a sprawling federal trial in late 2019, which resulted in conviction by jury, and had one of the central players as its chief witness. In some instances depicted in this book, there were conflicting versions of an event or its dialogue. I sought in every case to portray the most accurate version of events to the best of my ability with the information available to me, which included corroboration through other sources and attempts to reach the people depicted, if they were still alive. More information on the sourcing of specific information is provided in the notes at the end of this book. The names of two individuals, whom I refer to as Doug and Michelle, have been changed because their story includes disputed allegations of domestic violence. The name of another individual, an aide to a public official, was withheld because he was alleged to be the victim of a blackmail scheme involving his sexuality, though he denies that allegation. With the exception of a major character pivotal to the story, I also chose not to name James Burkes girlfriends in order to protect their personal privacy.
