This book makes a contribution to ongoing European research into the political discourse of the early modern era, analyzing the political discourse of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (15691795). The sources comprise the broadly understood political literature from the end of the sixteenth century until the end of the eighteenth century. The author has selected and analysed concepts and ideas that are particularly important for the noble political discourse, with the aim of understanding what these concepts meant for the participants in public debate, who used them, how they explained and described the world, how they allowed for the formulation of political postulates and ideals, whether their meaning changed over time, and if so, then to what extent and under what influences. The authors research focuses not only on the understanding of the concepts that functioned in the period under study but also on their use as instruments in the political struggle. The book is addressed to readers from the academic milieu students and researchers but is likewise accessible to less prepared readers interested in the history of political language and concepts as well as the history of political thought.

Whoever undertakes to study matters of morality and politics should first establish the exact meanings of words.
The meaning of words, the meaning of expressions, maxims, propositions, means and aims, cannot be agreed upon singularly by everyone. Moreover, [the notions of] interest, virtue, reason, common good, truth, wealth, freedom, honor, glory are subject to either a thousand doubts or to excessively contradictory explanations and understandings in political materials.
These are the thoughts with which a certain eighteenth-century author of political treatises (Leonard Woczkiewicz Olizar, mostly forgotten today, perhaps rightfully so) chose to begin a political disquisition in 1790. Although he was not a preeminent thinker, there is no denying that here he very aptly put his finger on a very important issue that somewhat escapes the attention of historians namely, the issue of the political language used by participants in political discussions of previous times, above all the precise meanings carried by the words they used.
Certainly, no historical period can be properly made sense of without first getting to understand its political language. However, this is not always an easy task, and it is certainly a difficult one in the case of the political language of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (15691795). The way we discuss politics today is far removed from the discourse of political debates in those times. Three or four centuries on, Polish words like prawo (law), wolno (freedom) or Rzeczpospolita (Commonwealth) remain outwardly unchanged, but their meanings have shifted from how they were understood in previous centuries, often considerably so. To borrow a phrase from C.S. Lewis, modern readers may get tripped up by the dangerous meanings of such familiar but misleading words.
This book sets out to explore in detail some of the terms and concepts used in the political discourse in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and to scrutinize the underlying ideas in depth. This is an important problem, if only because the political language of any historical period lays out certain frames of reference for people who engage in discussions on matters of state importance, whether as theorists or as active participants. Getting to understand the political language of a period is therefore the starting point for understanding what participants in those discussions and debates were able to describe, realize or understand. Often it also helps to explain why political commenters felt a certain way about this or that specific political decision.
