Acknowledgements
I would sincerely like to thank all the institutions that contributed to the development of this book and its final form. I am very grateful to the British Academy for a scholarship that enabled me to track down traces of Boruwaski in England, to Durham University Library, the Chapter Library at Durham Cathedral, and the City Council of Durham, and to the Royal College of Surgeons of England for granting access to illustration material and consent for its publication. Apart from these institutions themselves I wish to thank their staff members for the interest they took in my work and all the kindness and assistance they showed me. I am indebted to Andrzej Suchcitz and Dr Krzysztof Stoliski for assistance and inspiration at the beginning of my research on Boruwaskis story, and am grateful to Mr Alain Duperon for providing me with materials resolving the riddle of what subsequently happened to Boruwaskis wife Isalina Barboutan and their daughter Georgiana Fanny.
This book could never have been written without the assistance, advice, and support of my husband Marek, who accompanies me on all my scholarly escapades with unswerving patience and a sense of humour.
