The colossal scale of World War II required a mobilization effort greater than anything attempted in all of the worlds history. The United States had to fight a war across two oceans and three continents-and to do so it had to build and equip a military that was all but nonexistent before the war began. Never in the nations history did it have to create, outfit, transport, and supply huge armies, navies, and air forces on so many distant and disparate fronts. The Axis powers might have fielded better trained soldiers, better weapons, better tanks and aircraft. But they could not match American productivity. America buried its enemies in aircraft, ships, tanks, and guns; in this sense, American industry, and American workers, won World War II. The scale of effort was titanic, and the result historic. Not only did it determine the outcome of the war, but it transformed the American economy and society. Maury Kleins A Call to Arms is the definitive narrative history of this epic struggle, told by one of Americas greatest historians of business and economics, and renders the transformation of America with a depth and vividness never available before.

Preface:
The Unluckiest Generation

This book explores a dimension of World War II that is often mentioned but rarely explained in detail. It describes how Americans at home mobilized for what became the first truly global war in history. The scale of their effort was epic, their task a stupendous one. The story of how it all got done is both complex and convoluted, which is why it has been so difficult to tell. Yet it is unquestionably one of the most important stories in our history for several reasons. Most obviously, the combined effort of so many diverse Americans won this gigantic war, the stakes of which were for the nation matched only by those of the Civil War. Beyond this great achievement, the outcome of their labors, and the process by which it was accomplished, have shaped American history since 1945. Their influence still resonates deeply in our lives and institutions today.

Consider just this short list of its impact. Military spending for preparedness ended the decade-long Great Depression, and wartime outlays laid the foundation for an unprecedented period of postwar prosperity and the flowering of the consumer economy. The war created the industrial-military complex and fostered the rise of Big Science. It introduced the world to the most destructive weapons in human history and thereby set the stage for the Cold War and its lethal arms race. For the first time the military remained a large and continuing presence in American life. For the first time, too, the United States, like it or not, assumed the leading role in world affairs. Even more than in 1918 it was the only major power left standing.

Technologies developed during the war moved to the center of American life in a burgeoning consumer economy. Jet planes, radar, magnetic tape recording, early computers, and a host of electronic innovations are but a few of the military products that found their way into consumer goods. Long-range bombers morphed into a new breed of commercial airliners. The revitalized automobile industry poured out more cars than ever before, including a civilian version of the ubiquitous jeep. A new generation of appliances incorporated improvements developed originally for military use. The Space Age has deep roots in wartime developments.
