A Memoir by Way of Introduction; or, How I Got Here from There
This collection of essays and articles represents work done over a period of twenty-five years.1 It includes scholarly articles, papers, pieces done for popular magazines or public occasions, and one new essay. What they all have at their center is a fascination with the role played by the railroad in American life. Together with some of my books, this work has branded me as a specialist in railroad history among historians and others interested in railroads. While flattering in its way, this was not a reputation I had ever sought or intended. Like many people, I found myself with a career I had never coveted or even known existed.
