Introduction to Andele: The Mexican-Kiowa Captive
The end of the Civil War abolished chattel slavery in much of North America, but in the West another form of human bondage persisted. Under a regular column titled "Indian Matters," the October 20, 1866, issue of The New Mexican warned that the Probate Judge of San Miguel County had reported several recent depredations by Apaches in the vicinity of Las Vegas.
