Foreword
Good field work in anthropology demands two qualities: a sound knowledge of the discipline and the ability to relate meaningfully with respondents in a culture different from ones own. The Latorres have admirably demonstrated both of these qualities in this most significant study. Besides filling a notable gap in our knowledge of the Kickapoos, this book also illustrates the need for patience and understanding in the delicate task of interpreting another way of life. The Latorres combine perceptive observation with great skill and perseverance in arriving at the social realities behind the conflicting information gathered from different respondents.
The excellence of this volume is especially notable in view of the massive failure by others who preceded the Latorres in attempts to gain acceptance by the Coahuila Kickapoos in order to study their way of life. These Indians have, for many reasons, both valid and invalid from our viewpoint, been extremely suspicious of outsiders who desire to enter the confines of their world. Many have tried to penetrate the culture of the Coahuila Kickapoos in order to study them, but none met with any notable success before the Latorres. Robert E. Ritzenthaler and Frederick A. Peterson, for example, are both competent researchers; yet they totally failed in gaining Kickapoo acceptance. In fact, they met with such an increasing hostility that they were forced to abandon their attempted study after a stay of only three weeks.
The Latorres carefully researched the available literature before entering the field and planned a slow and cautious approach. Rather than appear uninvited in the Kickapoo community, they wisely settled in the nearest market town. Here they met and befriended the Indians who came to town and began to render them small but essential services. Their friendship with Chief Papicoano finally opened the way for friendly visits to the Kickapoo village. For at least six months the Latorres concentrated on gaining Indian acceptance and trust rather than attempting any in-depth study of the culture itself.
