Preface
This volume consists of four essays that appeared in a book that I edited entitled The Evolution of the Mexican Political System. That work resulted from a colloquium held at the University of California, Irvine, on April 28-29, 1990. Its twelve chapters, some written in English and some in Spanish, examined the politics and political processes of Mexico during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The volume was well received by reviewers and the public and is now out of print. Comments by a number of generous colleagues, among them Colin M. MacLachlan, William Beezley, and Paul Vanderwood, convinced me that the essays by Christon I. Archer, Virginia Guedea, myself, and Barbara A. Tenenbaum constituted a useful introduction to the politics of early independent Mexico. Therefore, I proposed to Richard Hopper that SR Books reissue those essays under the title
