The Venetians built this mighty fort in the 16th century to strengthen the towns defences. Despite its name, Neo Frourio (New Fortress) was completed only a few years after the Old Fortress. A haven for anyone who likes to read, run or simply take refuge from the summer heat under the trees or the bandstand, this is the towns largest square. It is divided in two by Viktoros Dousmani Street to create Ano Plateia and Kato Plateia.

An iconic Old Town sight, the Liston was built in 1807 by Mathieu de Lesseps, a Frenchman. Known for its arcaded terraces and stylish cafs, this is a fine example of the architecture of the Napoleonic period. The terrace was inspired by the Rue de Rivoli in Paris.

Dominating Plateia Spianda, this 19th-century monument is reminiscent of a Roman rotunda. It was built to commemorate the life of Sir Thomas Maitland, the first Lord High Commissioner of the Ionians (181523) during the British administration.
