Antalya
Established as a naval base for King Attalus II in the 2nd century BC, Antalya evolved under alternating periods of Christian and Muslim domination that ended with its absorption into the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. Today, vast hotels and apartment blocks line the citys superb beaches at Konyaalt and Lara, and the regions farmland and greenhouses provide over 60 per cent of Turkeys fruit and vegetable needs. The enormously atmospheric Old Town (Kaleii) remains the focus for visitors to this vibrant city.
Konyaalt Beach Antalyas famous pebble beach, awarded a Blue Flag for cleanliness, is a picturesque sight as it arcs towards the distant Toros mountains.
Archaeological Museum Packed with sarcophagi, mosaics and other relics from nearby sites, this museum one of Turkeys best offers a fascinating insight into the regions past.
Yivli Minaret Built on the orders of Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad in the 13th century, this elegant fluted minaret can be seen from all around the Old Town.
Clock Tower (Saat Kulesi) One of a pair of towers that once guarded the main entrance of the Old Town, the Clock Tower takes its name from a 19th-century addition to the original structure.
Old Town (Kaleii) With its maze of narrow cobbled streets, old Ottoman houses, secluded gardens, plentiful tea houses and ancient Roman walls, Kaleii is a delight to explore.
Tekeli Mehmet Paa Mosque This single-domed mosque dates back to the end of the 16th century. The interior is unadorned and punctuated with simple coloured glass windows.
Hadrians Gate Though it now stands well below street level, this magnificent triple-arched gate was once one of the citys main entrances. It was built to honour a visit by Emperor Hadrian in AD 130.
Korkut Minaret Part of a mosque built by ehzade Korkut in the 15th century, this unusual minaret lost its upper half during a fire in 1846.
Hdrlk Tower Built from honey-coloured stone and showing few signs of decay, this squat cylindrical tower has stood here since the second century AD.
Karaaliolu Park This delightful, well-tended park runs parallel with the cliffs to the east of town. Dotted with statues and pretty flowerbeds, its a lovely place to escape from the heat.
Tip: If you are staying in Kaleii and have a car, take a ticket at the barrier and make sure that the hotel registers your vehicle so that you can drive in and out of the area without charge.
Tip: When visiting one of Antalyas high-end nightclubs, check the menu before ordering; drinks prices are often four or five times what they are in less exclusive establishments.
King Attalus II
Intent on maintaining control of his expanding kingdom, Attalus II (220138 BC), king of Pergamon and an accomplished military leader, founded Attalia (Antalya) to serve as a base for his powerful navy. According to legend, the site was chosen after he ordered his men to find him paradise on earth which it certainly must have seemed at the time, with its forested hills, idyllic golden beaches and stunning mountain backdrop.
