Fore word
As a youn g child, my mom wo uld tell me stories about brilliant Black people throughout hist ory. My favo rite was Nann y of the Maroons, a national hero in Jamaica, where my mom was born. Nanny was t he leader of a community of f ormerly enslav ed people known as the Mar oons, who she led to victory agains t British colonizers. She w as a rea l-life heroine . Learning about Nanny and all the re volutio nary people who had come befo re me, I felt inspire d and empow ered fr om a youn g age, and proud of my heritage. When I start ed going to school, ho wever , I foun d that the her oes I knew and lov ed wer ent recogn ized . My school histo ry books and curriculum oft en fe ature d only white people, and men tioned Black people only in the conte xt o f slav ery . I knew that there had been Black leaders, hist orians, activis ts, write rs, politicians, and change-make rsso why we ren t they celebr ated, too? Black histo ry has been ov erlook ed and minimize d in eve ry area o f societ y, and eve n worse, often erase d. Y e t, the contributions of Black people to socie ty influence e very part of ho w we li ve, fr om the art and culture we consume, to the rights we hav e. At the time of writing this, one o f the biggest global mo vement s in histo ry , Black Lives Ma tter , has shone a light on the injus tices tha t sti ll ex ist in socie ty . At a time when Black people are continuing to f ace racism , hostility , and discrimination, it is mor e vi tal than eve r that our his tory be celebra ted. Over the course of this book, y ou will meet a plethor a of inspir atio nal and influential names thr ougho ut history . Spanning the UK, the US, A frica, the Caribbean, and beyond, and cove ring the mighty Af rican empire s, the Colonization o f Africa , the US Civil Rights M ovemen t and more , youll le arn about some of the mos t defining periods in histo ry , and the people who pav ed the wa y for o thers to f ollo wfro m the litera ry legend May a Angelou and the incre dible enviro nmentalist Wa ngari Maathai, to the luminaries of this gener atio n, such as the British ra pper Stormzy , and activists Am ariyanna Copeny and Marley Dias. My hope is that the legends, leaders, and legacies in this book speak to you just like the stories f rom m y youth spok e t o me. Black culture , contributions, and consciousness they ar e the past, the prese nt, and the futur e. Mireille Harper
