Our objective in preparing this book was to provide a resource offering up-to-date basic science and relevant clinical expertise in the area of food hypersensitivity. The contributors are highly qualified experts in the many aspects of this field, authors able to present state-of-the-art and practical information.
The text is divided into five parts. The basic science section (Parts I and II) reviews the allergic and immunologic basis for food hypersensitivity. The clinical section (Parts III and IV) discusses in detail clinical manifestations, including prevalence, unusual presentations, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment. Part V contains chapters on the management of the hospitalized patient with food hypersensitivity, diets, and hypoallergenic formulas, as well as a list of patient resources. In order to achieve completeness in each of the five parts, some of the presented areas overlap.
Several chapters contain detailed information on immunologic mechanisms including food allergen characterization, food contaminants, and "hidden foods." Other chapters discuss non-IgE-mediated topics and atypical cutaneous manifestations. The presentation of neurologic, autoimmune, and psychological topics provides information for an integrated team approach in evaluating the food-allergic patient.
