Foreword
The women and men whose "ways with the willow" are recounted in this book have inherited an ancient and time-honored tradition. For countless generations, Native American hands have carefully gathered, split, cleaned, trimmed, and woven willows and other local plants into useful and beautiful containers in shapes both plain and fancy, decorated and nondecorated, but always pleasing to the eye. Mary Lee Fulkerson and Kathleen Curtis, both basket weavers who bring to their work a deep feeling for people and products, tell of the present generation of weaverssome young and some elderlyall dedicated to the continuation of their tradition. For these contemporary Indian people, the willow has been approached with heart, mind, and spirit, and the willow has given in the same way that it did for their ancestors. Their individual stories, here combined in the context of both urban and rural Nevada life, speak for the persistence of the genuine things, things of the hands.
