I love this book. Which is not to say that I didn't love the others I have written or will not love the books I plan for the future. But this one is special. Maybe it's because of the sheer folly of writing about arrow wounds as the world approaches the millennium wrapped in the potential for planetary nuclear destruction. Maybe it's because Western scientific medicine has doubled and redoubled on itself so many times that what was fresh and new five years ago is obsolete today. And maybe it's because people usually don't die from arrow wounds anymore. Today, late in the twentieth century, children are shot in city streets as they jump rope on the filthy sidewalks, the victims of snipers shooting at someone else. At least the wars on the frontier were fought for something, regardless of which side one supported. Now, America fights wars in foreign countries to ensure access to oil or to make sure the correct dictator remains in power even while the "enemy" burns the very same oil.
This little book may reflect my wish to return to less complex times, or it may be a tribute to the Native Americans who so desperately defended their homelands with bows and arrows. Then again, it may honor the wounded men of the U.S. Army of the West, or it may show my respect for the physicians who risked their own lives and limbs to treat the soldiers' injuries. Or it may just be something else and therefore none of the above.
