Foreword
Packaging is an immense, growing, and often exciting field, but it is not all glamor and achievement. On a day-to-day basis its success depends on wise and effective execution of professional procedures, including a great deal of attention to detail.
There has thus always been a need for how-to books in packaging to present the learning experiences and problem-solving solutions that professional packagers have wrested from the field as the result of great effort, much cost, and the development of considerable packaging skill.
The work that follows is such a book. It is, in effect, a road map showing how to chart a course through the complex steps of determining what packages you want, communicating these needs to suppliers so that they will understand them, and maintaining control over the quality and uniformity of supplies and services received. There is a very big dollars-and-cents aspect to the packaging know-how provided in the book, but more than that is the provision made for repeating package success on an orderly basis and for enhancing your own skills and knowledge as a professional packager.

I hope that the reader benefits from this approach.
Overall, packaging is a rewarding profession, for two reasons. First, there is always a need for good packaging technologists, since nearly everything grown or made must be packaged for identity, product protection, distribution, and marketing. Packaging has become a global phenomenon and continues to grow in proportion to GGP (gross global product). National packaging institutes were founded during or shortly after World War II, to manage problems in distribution in growing economies and international trade. In 1968 the World Packaging Organization (WPO) was established; it now consists of 49 nation-members represented by their respective national packaging institutesa mix of packaging-research laboratories, government departments, professional societies, and trade associations. It has been my privilege to work on packaging projects in 16 countries and to participate with packaging professionals from 44 countries in conventions, expositions, and educational seminars. Beside the WPO and its members,
