Preface

By Matt Whetton

So youve decided you want to make an app,and youve realised that maybe theres a little more to it than just knockingsome code together (technical term I know) and publishing it to the app store.Maybe youre a developer who knows how to code, but needs help with thebusiness, research and planning for your app. Or perhaps youre an entrepreneurthat has an idea but needs to know how to get from idea to published app. Ormaybe youre a bit of both! Either way this book is here to help you!

No matter how you look at it, theres a lotthat goes into making an app. Whether it be coming up with an idea, researchingthat idea, working out the monetisation strategy, choosing the right platformor doing the actual app development - theres a lot to consider, and thatsbefore we look at marketing. So its really important that you get all yourducks in a row, and by that I dont mean make a game called ducks in row (althoughit sounds like a winner), I mean get a good understanding of what its going totake to start taking advantage of the app stores.

Now, whilst its really important that youunderstand what you need to know to make an app, you probably dont have acouple of years to research everything, but who does?! Im not saying that youneed to do a couple of years research in order to make a decent app, but if youstart Googling the subject theres every chance youll wake up in 2 years andwonder how you got there.

Be Smart About What You Learn

Dont get me wrong, I love Google and useit almost hourly, but when researching a vast topic like making an app its alltoo easy to suffer one of two problems. The first is disappearing down therabbit hole, and the second is information overload.

Disappearing Down the Rabbit Hole

Disappearing down the rabbit hole issomething that Ive written about before , and it can be a time killer. Its where youre researching a vastsubject, and slowly find yourself descending into more and more detail abouteach topic, until you lose sight of what you were researching in the firstplace.

A trait that really helps when making apps(or doing anything complicated really), is being happy with not knowingeverything, and only learning what you need to. This can be an incrediblydifficult pill to swallow for software developers. Most times we prefer to gaina thorough understanding of every aspect of something before making a start -but each and every aspect of making and marketing apps is a discipline untoitself, and trying to understand everything in great detail will result infailure.

That isnt to say you should ignore everypart of making and marketing an app, but that you should understand how it allfits together, get a basic understanding of everything and then decide if andwhere to get a deeper understanding. Being structured like this really helpsprevent accidentally disappearing down the rabbit hole!

Information Overload

The second problem I mentioned isinformation overload, which is a term that is bandied around a lot but I thinknot appreciated in a practical sense. It occurs when you start to look at asubject and get overwhelmed by firstly the sheer amount of information aboutit, secondly the vast array of topics and sub-topics, and finally theconflicting opinions within those topics. This normally results in scatter-gunresearch that picks bits and bobs up from all over the place, or complete paralysisand fear. Damn you Google and your never-ending stream of articles!
