The cells were grown continuously at a dilution rate of 0.05 h-1 in a nitrogen limited medium containing 15% (v/v) octane. Note the convex fracture faces through the outer membrane (), and the cytoplasmic membrane (). The upper cell shows a concave fracture face where a granule was removed () while the lower cell shows a convex fracture face () along a granule, presumably between the PHA core and an enveloping membrane.
