ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank everyone who has played a role in my life throughout the years. Some of you have inspired me. A few of you have amused me. But all of you have encouraged me, and I am forever grateful.
To my sons, Baylor and Cullen McCallie, who have challenged me from the beginning and will inspire me until the end. I do it all for you. To my parents, Duke and Susan Fort, who showed me how to live and are always there for me. To my dearest friends Christine Hansen and Julia Jerome, who started this food festival madness with me years ago. No time has passed when were together. I admire the strong women you have become.
To Deborah Smith, who shared office space, recipes, and wild tales with me. You endured hearing about my dream more than anyone, and you were the first person to believe in me. Youre one of my favorite people. To Greg Arnsdorff, who taught me that loving yourself is the greatest love of all. More important, you taught me the difference between a true leader and someone in a leadership role. Im grateful that you allowed your spotlight to briefly illuminate my little corner of the world.
To my closest friend, confidant, and mentor, Judith Shuman. When you told me that I could do this, I believed you. This would not have happened without you. Thank you for seeing more in me than I could see in myself.
WHERE MY STORY BEGINS Sometimes, inspiration comes when you least expect it, and you didnt even know you needed to be inspired. In the summer of 2009, my son asked me what I dreamed of becoming when I grew up.
I told him that I had dreamed of being a writer. His eight years on this earth had turned him into quite the pessimist: A writer? Who would read it? A couple of weeks later, he brought up the subject again. What was that dream you had, the one that never came true? And for the first time, I wondered how I would ever be able to encourage my children to follow their dreams if I didnt at least attempt to follow my own. So what would I write about and how would I begin? I chose to write about my favorite subjectfoodand hoped that it would interest other people as well. Even though many of us are struggling to make ends meet in the current economy, we still find pleasure in food, from a simple dinner of rice and beans to the occasional splurge of filet mignon. Food nourishes, comforts, and unifies.
Sharing recipes and discussing food breaks down all social barriers. In August 2010, I began writing my food blog, A Well-Seasoned Life, as a way to open my kitchen to readers by sharing my recipes, cookbook reviews, restaurant reviews, and personal essays. Most of my recipe posts include helpful tips and step-by-step instructions to ensure success in the kitchen. I also dont believe it should cost a fortune to prepare a delicious meal, so most of my recipes are prepared with seasonal and affordable ingredients.
