T his book is the outcome of over 40 years of work carried out by numerous people, all of whom were committed to the stewardship of our natural world. It all started with my parents, Gerry and Sue Hardy, when they wrote the first edition of 50 Hikes in Connecticut in the mid-70s. Since those early days, three generations of Hardys (and Bujalskis) have continued to hike and enjoy the woods. Four subsequent editions were published through the efforts of my parents and brother, David Hardy, and now the mantle has been passed on to me. It has been a privilege to undertake this labor of lovecelebrating my family and love of the outdoors.

I could not have scouted out these 50 hikes over a seven-month period without my many hiking companions, and I am very grateful for their company and assistance: the Bujalskis (Phil, Nicholas, Anna, and Julia), Steffanie Moccia-Worrell, Janet Ainsworth, Elizabeth Fiorillo, Libby Wamser, Karen Normand, Linda Valentine, Patty Hardy, George Hynes, Dan Hughes, Melissa Hall, and Ben Sanford.

For their help with hikes in the fifth edition and initial scouting for this edition, I would like to thank members of the Connecticut Chapter of the Green Mountain Club, especially Carol Langley, Sarah OHare, Don Hagstrom, and Dick Hart. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Sarah Williams of the Guilford Land Conservation Trust for sharing her knowledge about the important work her organization performs in order to help build a natural legacy for all to enjoy.

I would also like to thank Michael Tizzano and Risn Cameron at the Countryman Press for their patience and perseverance in preparing this sixth edition.

Finally, the greatest thanks go to my family. None of this would have been possible without my parents. Gerrys greatest gift to me was his expansive curiosity and knowledge of the natural world, something I will always carry with me. When I examine trees, flowers, and wildlife, I will always be thinking of him. My deepest thanks as well to Sue for dragging us all out hiking over the years (I may have been reluctant as a teen, but now being in the wilderness nourishes my soul). I am also grateful to my brother, David, for trusting me to continue this family project, which he so expertly took on in the mid 90s. And for help with this edition specifically, I wish to thank my son, Nicholas, who served as my first reader and an expert initial editor. Enthusiastic conversations with him about each hike I took deepened my appreciation of the rich history and natural wonders of our beautiful state. Also endless thanks to my husband, Phil, for his patience and willingness to hike anytime. It was great to get out in the woods every week. Now that we have started this habit there is no stopping us!
