Acknowledgments
The chapters in this volume grew from research presented at the Third International Conference on Communication, Aging, and Health held in Kansas City, Missouri, in May, 1996. We are indebted to the sponsors of that conference for the support that ultimately led to the publication of this volume. We extend our thanks to the Merrill Advanced Studies Center and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas, who provided the primary support for the conference, as well as to the University of Kansas' Gerontology Center, Communication Studies Department, Office of International Studies and Programs, Center on Aging (University of Kansas Medical Center), and Hoechst Marion Roussel Pharmaceuticals.
We each received additional and much appreciated support from our respective universities during the preparation of the book manuscript. Our collaboration was greatly facilitated by a Big Twelve Faculty Exchange Fellowship awarded to Jon Nussbaum by the University of Oklahoma and a sabbatical leave awarded to Mary Lee Hummert by the University of Kansas. Mary Lee Hummert received further support during this project from National Institute on Aging/National Institutes of Health Grant R01 AG16352.
