INTRODUCTION
When David and Jodi Hollinger get their new Dalmatian pup, Elmo, they vow to do everything right.
"Too many of our friends own dogs with behavioral or medical problems that arose because they didn't get off to a good start," Jodi explains. "They didn't realize it takes time and effort to do it right."
"And it takes money, too," David adds. "That's why Jodi and I saved up until we could buy Elmo the best of everything. Plus we intend to devote the entire summer to making him the perfect pup."
By taking advantage of their company's flexible workweek plan and their vacation time, the Hollingers rarely leave Elmo at home alone during the next three months. They hire the most famous trainer in the state to give their new pup private lessons; Elmo eats the highest-quality food and receives state-of-the-art medical care when needed. By the time the Hollingers resume their normal lifestyle in September, they feel convinced that their now five-month-old Dalmatian and they will become the envy of every dog owner they know. One week, two chewed books, three shredded plants, and four puddles of urine later they decide their beloved new pet has developed some rare form of canine brain disease. "What else could it be?" Jodi wails in distress. "We did everything right!"

When I first began working with problem dogs and their owners more than 20 years ago, it all seemed so simple. At the time, I thought designing a training, exercise, feeding, and health-care program that would meet the needs of increasingly busy dog owners would solve all of their problems. So did a lot of other trainers and behaviorists, and over the years a steady stream of books, videos, and even computer programs has analyzed every conceivable aspect of contemporary dog ownership.
However, in our quest to develop the right method to select a new puppy or dog as well as the right training, exercise, feeding, and health-care programs, we overlooked one crucial fact: not only does each owner, dog, and environment exhibit unique characteristics, they also form a unique unit that continually changes.
