Preface

Although hydatid disease has got a global distribution, yet it is endemic in several parts of the world which include Mediterranean countries, North Africa, Middle-East, Indian sub-continent, Northern China, Philippines. However due to increased travel, physicians and surgeons may encounter this disease sporadically. The clinical features of liver hydatid depend on the size, number, vitality and stage of development of cyst. The diagnosis of liver hydatid cyst is established by Para-clinical investigations, especially imaging techniques such as ultrasonography, conventional radiology, and computed tomography as well as by immunological studies. Although treatment options of hydatid disease of liver have increased over the last two decades, including medical treatment, percutaneous drainage or combination of two modalities, surgery remains mainstay of the therapy. Many surgeons have tried laparoscopic intervention for hydatid cyst of liver and have had results comparable to open surgery, with added benefits of minimally invasive surgery.

The book presents an up to date review of the medical and surgical management of human abdominal hydatidosis. The publication comprises of various topics discussing the background, parasitology, epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, presentation, latest management and treatment of hydatid disease of liver, spleen and kidney in human beings. The book also comprises a chapters on primary peritoneal hydatidosis and minimal access management of abdominal hydatid disease.

The book will be of academic interest to all the students of medicine both undergraduates and post graduates and a reference book for teachers, academicians and researchers. The main benefit of reading this book is that since this disease entity is common in this part of world, all the relevant and latest information regarding this disease has been published in a comprehensive form which will be helpful to the researchers and students.

Hydatid disease, also known as echinococcosis, is a parasitic infestation that has a worldwide distribution. The term hydatid is from the Greek word meaning a drop of water or watery vesicle. The word echinococcus means hedgehog berry. Hydatid disease was alluded to by Hippocrates around 400 BC. Its parasitic nature was hypothesized by Pallas in 1766. The history of hydatid disease and human infections with other helminths was reviewed in the 1990s and the basic life cycle of the hydatid parasite (colloquially known as a tapeworm) was finally elucidated by Groove ().
