IntroductionI love food.Im pretty sure you love food too, which is why you bought this book.Theres so much to love about good foodflavor, taste, fuel, and nourishmentthat are important elements of our daily lives. But one of my favorite things is the social aspect surrounding it; sharing great meals with family and friends, and how even the simplest of meals can be about gathering and bringing people together.Its the homemade lemon birthday cake my grandmother, Baba, would make for me every year to celebrate another milestone (sometimes, going to great lengths of traveling with her cake stand cradled in her lap on DCs Metro to make sure it was safely delivered to the suburbs). Its rolling out Grandma Veras sugar cookies and pressing Norwegian sandbakkels into tins with my mom while Nat King Cole or Bing Crosby croons holiday favorites in the background. (We even packed our sandbakkel tins and rolling pin in our suitcases the year our family spent Christmas in Hawaii!) Its my sister, mom, aunt, and me churning out one hundred mini cherry and pecan pies three days before Katies wedding, chatting and laughing around Moms kitchen table while we mixed up pie filling and layered tiny lattice pie crusts. A lot of my favorite memories (I have some savory memories too, but all those that stick out in my mind are sweet) feature food, and my family and friends gathered around a table, talking, laughing, and eating.My husband, AJ, and I are now creating memories around our own kitchen table. We love having our friends and family over for everything from the holidays (this will be our fourth year hosting our family for Thanksgiving) to something more low-key like game night or watching a football game on TV. But I hate all the hubbub that comes with hosting: the prep, the cleanup, and the fact that the host inevitably ends up stuck in the kitchen rather than having fun and spending time with their guests. So, when it comes to hosting, I like to make it as hassle-free as possible.For a long time, I was intimidated and overwhelmed by in-home entertaining. When it came to feeding guests, it was hard for me to achieve a balance between frantically getting stuck and stressed in the kitchen and just mailing it in by opening a bag of chips, popping a jar of salsa, and calling it a day. It wasnt until I learned to balance what I could make from scratch, what I could rely on from the store, plus a healthy dose of timing and what Im going to call artful arranging (making things look nice and delicious and appealing on a plate or platter) that I gained confidence when it came to entertaining.So, what is that perfect balance? I like to call it easy entertaining. Making delicious and beautiful spreads for your guests doesnt have to be daunting, difficult, or time-consuming. By making a few easy-to-follow, uncomplicated recipes ahead of time, and then mixing those things with a few high-quality, store-bought snacks and ingredients, you can create a stunning spread that both your guests, and you, can enjoy. Because after all, your guests are in your home to, guess what, spend time with you.
