Plant species are being lost before we recognize their potential as sources of new medicines. This is equally true for the plants close to home. New Jersey (NJ) is extraordinarily rich in plant resources. This vol. describes 500 place species found in NJ & in nearby areas that have been used medicinally. Lists plants by family &, within each family, by genus & species, to underscore the close relationships among medicinally valuable species. Each entry discusses both the natural history & the historical & modern medicinal uses of the plant: scientific & common names, description, habitat, geographic range, & preparations & applications in Native Amer., European, African, & Asian herbal traditions. Most species are illus. with line drawings. Glossary.

PREFACE
Plants have always been important in medicine, but with the development of "modern" medicine and the then new chemotherapeutic agents such as the sulfa drugs and penicillin, public perception of the value of medicinal plants diminished. The pharmaceutical industry's renewed interest in medicinal plants can be attributed to the costs associated with the development and marketing of new synthetic drugs and with meeting the regulatory demands of governmental agencies. Current regulations permit the approval of a new drug from a natural source in much less time, saving millions of dollars. The current popular interest in medicinal plants for personal use and in alternative medicine can be viewed as a desire to return to aspects of the medicine of earlier times. This renewed interest has also led to an increasing regard for wild plants as positive contributors to the environment.
My interest in the medicinal plants of northeastern America, especially those of my home state of New Jersey, stems from both my family heritage in herbal medicine and my work as a plant scientist. In the nineteenth century, one of my ancestors, James Still (1812-1885), a self-taught healer, traveled the New Jersey pinelands and practiced what was, in its time, an alternative to the accepted modern medical practice. People from all over southern New Jersey and Philadelphia sought out his herbal preparations and medical advice. Although Still's direct descendants did not carry on his herbal medical practice, I feel that knowing about his achievements stimulated my own early interests in looking for local medicinal plants and growing them myself.
