Preface
I decided to write this book to help companies deal with a new reality in the workplacethat of the 24-hour business. If you are already a 24-hour business, this book will show you a better way to reduce costs and improve the morale, health, and safety of your employees. If you are not, this book will help you determine whether you should be so that you can reap the benefits of utilizing time to its fullest, a resource that's much cheaper than adding new equipment or people.
I realize I have an unusual occupation as a shift work consultant. How did I come to it? Although I worked the occasional shift job as a glass packer, dishwasher, postal worker, and truck unloader and spent several years as an all-night sleep technician, I didn't give shift work much thought until 1979, when I was director of the Sleep Disorder Clinic at Stanford University Medical School in California. There, I saw many shift workers who came to our clinic with numerous health problems. After doing complete physiological monitoring of them, I found that they were just as normal as you and me except for one thingtheir work schedule. When I asked them what schedules they worked, I realized their problems were caused by the schedule itself. That's when the light-bulb went on. Furthermore, I discovered that the shift workers accepted working 14 out of 15 days, 16-hour shifts, and odd rotations as just a normal part of life.
In the early 1980s I had the opportunity to do research studies at a few shift work facilities to improve schedules. The initial emphasis was on health and safety, but I found out early on that better schedules could also help employee morale and improve business profitability. That's when I "hung up a shingle," and after hiring a group of enthusiastic engineers with outgoing personalities, started a shift work consulting business. During the past 15 years

my colleagues and I have talked to more shift workers, shift work managers, and union leaders about 24-hour scheduling than anyone else in the world. In The 24-Hour Business, I share information that will improve shift work for everyone involvedmanagers, shift workers and their families, and even the shareholders who invest in 24-hour businesses.

Acknowledgments
Thanks to all of the employees of Coleman Consulting Group in the United States and in Australia for sharing their experiences with me. I also thank the shift workers, managers, and union officials with whom we have worked throughout the world. I am especially grateful to Kathy Amrhein, Jim Cox, Alex Heady, Karl Meyers, Tom Meyers, Carolyn Peterson, Mac Robertson, Richard Scallan, and Clyde Williams. Special thanks go to Deana Bolton for her tenaciousness in keeping this project on track, Dennis Murphy for his contribution to and review of the manuscript, and Deanna Walsh for her insights and judgment.
