we must carry it with us or we find it not.

To all the titleholders who have re p resented,

CONTENTS
The Miss Universe contest is a beautiful collaboration uniting men and women across the globe, from camera crew to government officials, to the stunning women who compete for the crown. So its fitting that this book has also been a true team effort. While its impossible to individually thank everyone involved, Id like to mention a handful.
First, the Miss Universe Organization thanks the titleholders, former and current, whose beauty, grace, charisma, hard work, and philanthropy set an example for women around the world, year after year. These are strong women with enviable looks and lives. They are lawyers, politicians, heads of companies, actresses, models, mothers, wives, and so much more. Many of them endured long interviews and shared beauty secrets that their husbands dont even know. Just a few notables: Natalie Glebova revealed how to walk in high heels, Jennifer Hawkins disclosed why she rarely suffers from blemishes, Amelia Vega expounded upon the merits of raw egg whites, Brook Lee and Margaret Gardiner told us about their remarkably low-maintenance primp routines, Porntip Bui Nakhirunkanok Simon and Martha Vasconcellos detailed why theyll never go without sunscreen, Angela Visser sent adorable pictures of her daughter, Wendy Fitzwilliam outlined her trick for keeping skin hydrated during air travel, Maritza Sayalero waxed poetic about lipstick, and Yvonne Agneta-Ryding mused about her long walks in the woods.
Thank you to our wise and wonderful group of experts, who contributed a wealth of information about keeping the body gorgeous and healthy from head to toe. Among them, makeup artists B.J. Gillian from CoverGirl and Linda Rondinella-Osgood, dermatologist Cheryl Thellman-Karcher, hairstylist John Barrett, hair colorist William Howe, Reebok Sports Club fitness trainers Clayton James and Robert Sidbury, dentists Allyson K. Hurley and Radford Y. Goto, the Miss Universe Organizations style gurus Billie Causieestko and David Profeta, and manicurist Jin Soon Choi. I was amazed to find out about the Miss Universe Pageants large and devoted base of followers, including its number one fan and historian, William Prendiz, who was an invaluable re s o u rce.
This book would be nothing without the photographers and artists who translated pages of amazing advice into stunning pictures and illustrations. The Miss Universe Organizations phenomenal creative directors, Jessica Feder and Frank Szelwach, worked tire lessly, during long nights and weekends, to orchestrate this books production. (I suspect Frank knows m o re than he ever cared to about hair removal and proper blush placement.) Finally, thanks to my husband, Jake Harmon, for always making me smile when I was on deadline. After all, as Sylvia Hitchcock Carson (Miss Universe 1967) explained so well, smiling is the best beauty secret of all.
Cara Birnbaum
Beautiful women a re one of the great joys in lifemaybe the greatest joy, as far as Im concerned. While Ive written a lot about the art of the deal, I believe beauty is also an art. Like any other art form, it should be celebrated and appreciated.
The television ratings for the Miss Universe Pageant, which Ive owned since 1996, indicate that the world is very interested in beautiful women. This is not a big surprise to me, but its nice to know Ive got plenty of company. Thats one reason Ive decided to present Universal Beauty: The Miss Universe Guide to Beauty for worldwide consumption.
As with all of my endeavors, I have decided that only the best will do. So in the following pages you will be presented with the best as it pertains to beauty. The Miss Universe Pageant has become the United Nations of glamour, and this book reflects the global aspect and influence of this most coveted of beauty competitions.
The first Miss Universe Pageant was in 1952. It was one of the first showcases for true diversity, and it has served to shape and widen todays notion of beauty. It is now at the topthe icon of all pageants. I dont produce anything less than the best or the most exclusive, and this pageant reflects that standard. So does this book.
In the following pages, you will find a pictorial history of the Miss Universe Pageant, a glimpse of behind-the-scenes events at the competition, insider beauty tips, and step-by-step directions for applying professional beauty secrets in your everyday life. Every day is an event, whether or not youre Miss Universe, and this book will help you achieve the look that makes Miss Universe the most sought-after title in the world of beauty.
Enjoy, learn, and indulge in the art of beauty. Beauty is very much a treasure. And its a treasure you can develop and enhance by reading
