Preface
These word lists about food, and many more lists about a variety of subjects, are also available online for free at Words-to-Use.com. We hope you check us out on the web, but if you need a more mobile version for those moments when you are unplugged, you are going to love this book!
Words to Write About Food is a collection of the most potent adjectives, nouns, verbs, and phrases you can use to write about food and its qualities. Food writers of all experience levels will find this book to be of great use when struggling to overcome a moment of writer's block or when looking for unique sensory words to make their food writing more appealing.
This book was conceived after I worked for many years as a copywriter at a popular gourmet food retailer. After that job ended, I wrote down all of the food-related words that I found to be the most useful in my copywriting, as I would surely need these selling words in my next position.
My obsession with collecting food-related words kept growing and soon as I was thoroughly reading restaurant reviews and product descriptions to extract even more words. Because food types and preparations very so drastically, the word lists that I had been creating, which were now huge in size, were further divided into different types of food: General Food, Fruits & Vegetables, Meat & Seafood, and Desserts. My hope is that this specific categorization will help you to find the most targeted word you need in the shortest amount of time.
Some might say that this book is like a thesaurus, but it's better than a thesaurus. Instead of looking up words that all mean the same thing, you can find words specifically related to a single subject. This method of organization allows you to find many more word options and saves you time, especially as opposed to going to an online thesaurus and starting your search with a general word such as "delicious."
If you are just starting out with food writing and wondering if you have what it takes, remember that a good food writer only needs to have three important qualities: 1) a palate that is able to identify fine flavors, 2) the ability to write cohesively and correctly, and 3) the use of exceptional, expressive word choices. Using this book can certainly help you with the latter quality, and I wish you the best of luck in your food writing, whether it's for recipes, products, restaurant reviews, or just for fun!
