You hold in your hand more than a cookbook. You're holding an invitation to share a meal with the Creator of the world. Throughout the Old and New Testaments, food appears again and again in the pages of scripture. From Eve eating of the tree to the promise of supper in heaven, the Bible has a lot to say about food. Our view of food has a lot to do with our view of the Creator. And Cindy Anschutz invites us to enjoy a meal that will sharpen our view of God and bring us closer to Him.

Cindy is not only a talented chef and writer, she is also a vibrant part of the local church. She serves and influences others through her craft of cooking and her calling as a follower of Jesus. Just as Jesus used the table and meal to connect with others, Cindy is inviting us to connect with Him through these meals. As you fall in love with these recipes, I trust you will fall more in love with the scriptures and with God Himself.

The invitation is open to all who would answer. Go ahead and set the table. Prepare the meal and open your heart to see God more clearly.

Before I became a believer, I didnt think God loved me. As a divorced woman with two kids, it had been impressed upon me that I didnt belong to the church crowd. In 2015, my husband and I moved to South Florida, and in all honesty, finding a church was not on my agenda. However, I decided to attend church for Christmas and Easteryes, I was a Creastereven though I had been led to feel I didnt belong.

Then I was introduced to one of my now-close friends during a networking event. Our conversation moved to Jesus and quickly grew more serious. I told my friend and her husband that I didnt believe God loved me. Soon after, they invited me to their church. We sat in the back, and I honestly wasnt sure what to think of it, but something within me felt moved and renewed. Finally, I felt like I might be accepted in the church. Maybe God loved me after all. I wasnt exactly sure yet, but I kept coming back each week on my own, still taking it all in from the back row.

After a few months, I began attending a four-week seminar on God and our church. There I met a pastor and immediately started getting involved in service. It has been an amazing journey becoming part of a wonderful church and knowing that God does in fact love me!

It was at this wonderful church that I first learned about and began participating in the Daniel Fast, a partial fast based on the one described in the book of Daniel. This fast is an opportunity to pray and worship while consuming what the Lord has naturally provided, pressing into Him as your sustainer in the moments when this fast is most difficult. Use a journal to keep track of what you eat or drink, and also write down the prayers you have in those quiet moments with the Lord. Personally, I always start my journal with my reasons for dedicating this time to the Daniel Fast.

Above all: surrender . Theres no greater experience than surrendering our lives to the Lord. As believers, were not called upon to be comfortable, and submitting to that reality is never easy. But by setting out on the Daniel Fast, youre making a commitment to the Lord, and that is always an inspiring venture. It is truly humbling to watch another believer step out in faith knowing the Lord will act. I pray that He will move mightily in you, revealing the hope to which he has called you and the immeasurable greatness of his power throughout this journey (Ephesians 1:19, ESV).

I hope this cookbook and devotional will help you surrender to the Lord with the Daniel Fast, whether youre doing the simple 10-day fast or the flexible 21-day fast. I also hope you build confidence in yourself knowing that God loves you and is always waiting to listen to your prayers. Im thankful youve decided to go on this journey with me as we all draw closer to God with the biblical practice of fasting.
