She is the author of four successful books on landscape painting published by Eas'l and is at work on a fifth one. She has also had articles published in many of the painting magazines including The Decorative Painter. She is a member of the Society of Decorative Painters and Artistic Friends Club of St. Louis. She has been active in the craft market, both retail and wholesale, since her first store opened in 1974. She now teaches in her home studio and travels throughout the United States teaching in both oil and acrylic.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

To the staff at F+W, thank you, thank you. You were so understanding during a difficult time. Both Dave and I appreciate your help and kindness. I want to thank Kathy Kipp for considering me and for honoring me by asking me to do this book. Holly Davis, you were great to work with and I wish you success in your new position with F+W. Kathy, thanks for stepping in and helping with the completion of this book. Christine Polomsky, you made it so easy for me as you clicked photo after photo. A great staff, beautiful, informative books and a blessing to the artist.

DEDICATION

There is a special man in my life to whom I would like to dedicate this book, David, my husband of 47 years. During the painting and designing of the canvases in Painting Peaceful Country Landscapes, he had to do double duty. This last year has required much from him, and I appreciate all his help and comfort.

INTRODUCTION

Mountain Pines For years I only painted other artists patterns always - photo 9

Mountain Pines

For years, I only painted other artists patterns, always yearning to try a painting all my own. I did not feel I could draw or produce something other people would like. Many of you may feel the same way, or you just do not know how to start. My goal with this book is to encourage you and to provide information on how to start if you just feel hopeless with a pencil and paper.

Painting from photos gives the artist a head start. Not every painting has to be created from an idea in your head. Patterns are included in the book, and they will help you to paint the scenes. Copying patterns of different artists and using their instructions is a good learning experience. You cannot trace a pattern without learning something about form and perspective. When you are comfortable in your painting, begin to venture out by painting from your own photos. This book explains several different methods to help you transfer a photo idea to canvas. Utilize a palette from one of the paintings in this book to paint your own composition. Not every idea or pattern will create a lovely picture, but the more we practice, the better we become.

There are five acrylic projects and five oil projects in this book, but there also is an acrylic/oil colors conversion chart included. With this chart, you can select your preferred medium and paint all ten projects in this book with the same medium. Its difficult for me to decide which medium I prefer, oil or acrylic. Both mediums have their own special qualities. I have always thought of landscapes as being oils and decorative painting projects as acrylic. However, the painting principles remain the same using values correctly and keeping perspective in the drawing. Only the painting techniques vary from medium to medium.

Each photo chosen for this book, with the exception of Mountain Pines, was from a special trip that my husband and I took. Mountain Pines was a photo from a good friend who travels and takes hundreds of photos wherever she goes. I appreciate her loaning me her photos to use in this book. As I painted from our photos, some wonderful memories came back to me and they have made this an extra special book. I hope it becomes a special painting book for you as well.

ACRYLIC PAINTS

Five landscapes in this book are painted with acrylic, and five are painted with oil. You may paint the projects in their designated mediums or use the to paint the project in your preferred medium. The next few pages are an overview of materials you will need to complete the projects in the book, organized by medium.
