The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway and the Canadian Northern Railway, two giants of Canadian rail transportation, each operated maritime shipping ventures during the early twentieth century. Numerous vessels, including sidewheel, paddlewheel, and propeller steamers, tugboats, and barges, helped to build and serve these railways. Passenger and merchant ships sailed the West Coast, the Great Lakes, and St. Lawrence River, and served Canadian and European ports, in a time when groundings, shipwrecks, and sinkings often claimed lives. These same steamship lines played an important role in World War I, when Canadian vessels ferried men and war supplies. Many troopships and freighters were torpedoed, and Canadian Northerns entire transatlantic fleet was virtually obliterated. Illustrated with contemporary photographs and drawings, this book pays tribute to the maritime enterprises of two trailblazing Canadian railway greats.

Preface

M uch has been written with regard to the histories of Canadas great transcontinental railways. However, with the exception of the Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railways, the story behind their involvement with maritime affairs on salt and fresh water has gone relatively untold. This book attempts to correct this oversight by identifying and describing the various shipping enterprises of the Grand Trunk Pacific and Canadian Northern Railways between 1900 and 1920.

Each chapter after the introduction in the first chapter covers a particular aspect of the maritime operations of one railway on either salt or fresh water. Within this framework, steamer operations are individually described following a chronological and/or geographical order as befits the circumstances.

In order to improve readability of the text, and at the same time provide salient details of the vessels owned/operated, tables have been provided at the end of each chapter describing the most important vessels discussed in that chapter.

As a general rule of thumb, the author has attempted to present at least one photograph or drawing of every vessel that is the subject of a descriptive table, along with a selection of illustrations representing related maritime infrastructure. In some cases, either no photographs were ever taken or none have, as yet, come to light. Photographic quality has also presented some problems. Ideally, only the sharpest and clearest photographs should be used in a book, since these are easily reproduced and readily understood. The author has chosen to include a small number of marginal photographs, if for no other reason than that they represent the only photographs available at the time of writing.

The author has provided appendices that describe the house flags and funnels of the steamship lines reviewed in this book, a listing of sources of scale model kits and ship plans available to those who wish to scale model vessels and infrastructure described in this book, and a glossary of nautical abbreviations and terms.
