Contents
Preface

This is a practical book, written by a man who presently works in the field and has instructed in the field as well as in the classroom. This book is a reference manual that can be carried in your tool box. Much of the information was gained through work experience and does not appear in any other text or reference manual.

Students bring many different books on class field problems with them. These texts and reference books usually contain many pages with a lot of words that can not be related to the field. These books are merely theory presented in classroom lectures. Students want a hands-on reference guide that can easily be carried. This book fills that need.

Handy homeowners will find this book a helpful guide to making simple repairs and understanding how air conditioning works. Performing simple preventive maintenance procedures can save youthe homeownermoney, as well as spare you many unnecessary breakdowns.

Introduction

Contributions to this book were written by dedicated men who worked most of their lives in the refrigeration and air conditioning fields. This edition of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Repair is targeted to the frustrated service technicians and homeowners who deal with malfunctioning equipment. We have seen people, during the heat of summer, enduring torturous conditions waiting for a service technician to arrive. In many cases, a better understanding of this equipment could allow its repair to be made by the homeowner.

The text covers residential equipment only, including window units, automobile units, and refrigerators. Some light commercial equipment is discussed. For the first time, text has been prepared with both the homeowner and professional in mind. Its method of presentation does not demean the intellect of either; yet both will understand thoroughly how the system works.

This book explains in detail all the preventive maintenance that can be performed by homeowners to add years to the lives of their systems. Service technicians can use this guide to establish preventive maintenance programs for their customers.

This book can be carried in the technicians tool box or placed in the home library by the homeowner. Should the homeowner save the cost of one service call and all the discomfort connected with the malfunction, this book has served its purpose.

CHAPTER 1
Basic Electricity for Refrigeration

I want to cover in a practical way the failures and troubles that occur in the air conditioning field. If you analyze air conditioning failures, you find that 80 percent of them are electrical failures. The remaining 20 percent of the problems are in the closed refrigerant system. With this in mind, the book is focused on 80 percent electrical malfunctions and 20 percent on closed system failure. If you look at the books on library shelves concerning air conditioning and refrigeration, much of the texts are not relevant to the field. They might have one or two chapters on electrical failures. I have written this book so the student or professional will be able to go into the field with a few tools and diagnose problems.

With this in mind, I begin with basic electricity. High-voltage transmission wires are carried within insulators on top of cross-members of power poles. Voltages are quite high; they can be 4160 volts, 3600 volts, 2400 volts, or higher. The purpose of using high voltage is to reduce wire resistance line losses.

shows distribution from network to step-down transformer with the primary attached to the high-voltage top cross bar conductors. The secondary of this transformer has a center-tap neutral and two line wires. Line one and line two are connected to the lower conductors on the bottom cross bars of the power poles. In the schematic, the secondary wires are leaving the transformer and are wired to an electrical watt-hour meter that records energy consumed.
