Introduction
Jacob was ten years old when his brother Noel was born. He thought that it would be great having a little brother around. Jacob hoped to teach Noel how to play baseball, build a snowman, and ride a bike someday. Little did he know that Noel would not grow up like other boys. Jacob might never have the opportunity to teach him all the things he had hoped. Some days Jacob feels that Noel doesn't even realize that he has an older brother.
Noel is five years old now and has never spoken a word. When Jacob tries to talk to him, it's almost as if Noel doesn't hear him or is ignoring him. Noel doesn't like to be held or cuddled and pulls away if anyone, including his parents, touches him even slightly. He has never made a

single friend in the neighborhood and likes it best when he is just left alone.
For a few hours each day, Noel sits on the living room floor and rocks back and forth, staring into space as if he's daydreaming. Jacob bought Noel a train set for his last birthday, and Noel loves watching it go around and around the track. Sometimes he watches the train for hours without moving a muscle.
Noel likes his life to run on a schedule. There is a specific time to eat, sleep, and play. If he has to eat a little bit earlier or later than usual on a particular day, he gets very upset and throws a tantrum, making screaming and growling noises and sometimes even biting himself or banging his head against the wall. Noel never cries after hurting himself Pain does not exist for him.
Often when the family goes on an outing, people who don't know Noel remark that he is behaving rudely or is strange. Jacob feels embarrassed by the way Noel acts and is sometimes too ashamed to have friends over to his house. Jacob knows, though, that his brother doesn't do the things he does on purpose. Jacob understands that Noel is autistic.
