acknowledgments from Rose

Several very special people have had a great influence in my development as an artist, and I would like to acknowledge them here:

Robert E. Wood was one of this country's great watercolorists. His teaching of underpainting and layering color against bright accents were perhaps my greatest inspiration. He was also a master designer and taught me the importance of cohesive design in every painting.

Ed Whitney helped me to establish a personal philosophy of art. Through him, I came to believe we are shape-makers.

Warner Sallman, a world famous painter of religious figures, was my art mentor at North Park University. He was a great encouragement in regard to accuracy in figure drawing.

At times it is a humbling experience to know you can paint and teach, but have a hard time putting it together in writing. Dee Jepsen came along at just the right time to co-author this book. With her experience in writing, art and organization, she has enabled me to get across important art concepts. So thank you, Dee, for a terrific job!

dedication

This book is dedicated to my husband, Stan, my daughter Kathy and my son, Jonathan, who encouraged, typed and critiqued the initial drafts that eventually became this book.

Stan is a computer guru, in addition to being a photographer. The best thing is that he has become a gourmet chef these last few months while I have been working on this book.

Accolades go to my fellow artists and students I have had the pleasure to meet all over the world. They have encouraged and inspired me to stretch my abilities. It is through teaching that I have created many of the techniques shared in this book.

about Rose Edin

From the time she received her first set of paints as an eight-year-old art - photo 4

From the time she received her first set of paints as an eight-year-old, art has been a passion for Rose. Her high school offered no art classes, so she applied for and won a scholarship to the Art Instruction Schools of Minneapolis, which offered correspondence courses in commercial art.

Teaching junior high school art in central Minnesota for eleven years prepared Rose for the many workshops she now offers to students from both the United States and aboard. She laughingly says, If a you can teach junior high students, you can teach anyone!

During her years as a teacher, she began to enter local and statewide art competitions and received many awards. She is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, where she holds a master's status.

Rose and her husband, Stan, lead painting and photography groups around the globe to both familiar and remote places, where Rose gleans ideas and inspiration for her watercolor paintings.

Dee was born and raised in the Midwest, but moved to Washington, D.C. when her husband was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1978. In 1981, Dee was appointed to serve on the President's Task Force for Private Sector Initiatives to encourage volunteerism. In 1982 and 1983 she was appointed to serve at the White House as a Special Assistant to the President for Public Liaison to women's organizations.

Following her government service in Washington, Dee wrote an award-winning book Women: Beyond Equal Rights. Since that time she has authored three other books, and has written articles for inclusion in numerous other books and publications.

Dee has studied and painted in oil and acrylic for 35 years, including summer study at the ArtStudy program in Giverny, France. She paints many animal portraits for clients, and donates paintings for auction at charitable events. Only recently she has begun painting in watercolor under the instruction of Rose Edin.

preface

What a joy it has been for me to work on this book with Rose. She can certainly be counted among the best watercolorists in the country. In addition to being a great watercolorist, she is a wonderful woman and has become a very good friend. I have personally learned immensely by writing about and studying Rose's work as I labored on this book.

Rose has become my artistic mentor, and I have become an ardent student. I have been an oil and acrylic painter for decades, yet from her I have acquired some valuable knowledge about the more effective use of color and the magic of color harmonies. I have learned that Rose's techniques apply to my mediums of choice, though her work has also inspired me to try watercolor.

It is my hope that you will soak up the teachings in this book and be inspired by the art and lessons herein. We all are given a creative urge; may this book help you fulfill your innate desire to create works of beauty and grace.

Dee Jepsen
