Acknowledgments
I could not have completed this novel without help from the following people:
First, I am grateful to my husband, Matthias Guenther, because he supported us, which freed me to concentrate solely on writing. Most of all, though, I owe Matthias special thanks because he urged me to let go of the negatives that inevitably accompany work on a project of this nature.
Kathryn Jacobi-Dysart was the first to read early segments of Stone Horses. She recognized a spark of potential and encouraged me to work on. Her enthusiasm on behalf of this novel has remained constant over the years, so it is only fitting, and a real honor to me, that her own work graces the cover of this book. Apart from being an artist of exceptional talent, Kathy is the most positive and gracious person I have known; I am fortunate to have her friendship.
I am indebted to John Trujillo because he helps me keep dreams alive.
I am thankful to Dinah Lea Jentgen of Las Cruces, New Mexico, who proofread the entire manuscript before it was presented to the University of New Mexico Press.

Tom Mayer's straightforward advice and excellent creative writing classes at the University of New Mexico set me in the right direction.
David Remley, professor emeritus of the University of New Mexico, not only followed progress on Stone Horses but also recommended it to the University of New Mexico Press.
Finally, I thank all of the people at the University of New Mexico Pressthose up front and behind the sceneswho had a hand in bringing Stone Horses to the point of publication. I am especially grateful to Barbara Guth, managing editor, for her support from start to finish, to Andrea Otaez, editor-at-large, whose patience and professionalism were unfailing, and to Karin Kaufman, copy editor, whose closing comments on my novel were exactly the words I needed to hear.

This book is for my father, Arnold Leopold Gallegos,
and all of the men and boys whose lives were interrupted
,
irrevocably changed
, or, at worst, lost in the terrible experience
of World War II
. Like they and their loved ones did so many
years ago
, pray for peace, pray for brotherhood.

Elena took baby Marcos out of the wooden box where he spent the day while the family worked in the garden. Snuggling the baby against her, she kissed his head and sat in the cool grass with her back against the trunk of a huge cottonwood tree to nurse him. Eduardo watched the black ball of his brother's head and the small hands that fingered the buttons of their mother's blouse.
Rosita, Eduardo's paternal grandmother, sitting beside Elena, saw her grandson staring at his mother and the baby; she put her hands on Eduardo's hips and pulled him into her lap. "Shall I tell you how it was when you were born?" she asked.
"Yes," answered Eduardo, still watching his mother and the baby.
"Very well. One year before you were born, your mother gave birth to a baby, a little boy. He was born here in Los Torbellinos, New Mexico, in your mother's bedroom. But the poor child became ill and died two weeks after he was born. Father Martinez baptized him before he died, and the child, your brother, is now a little angel in heaven." Eduardo was finally concentrating on the story. Rosita paused and asked, "Do you know what the child's name was?"
"Yes," said Eduardo; Rosita had been telling him this story since he could remember. "His name was Eduardo Ricardo Montez like my name."
"Exactly. His name was Eduardo Ricardo Montez, and he was born on January 29, 1925. In the beginning, he was a healthy baby. We sent for the priest who made the child's birth certificate and entered the child into the church ledger under the family name. Then suddenly the baby became ill. He could not keep any food

inside of him, and soon he could no longer take milk. The priest baptized him three days before he died. Your poor mother was sick with grief. We were all very sad. But one year later, on December 28, 1926, your mother was blessed with another child."
"I was the child," blurted Eduardo.
"Yes," Rosita laughed, "you were the child. You were handsome and strong and healthy. You helped us let go of the sadness. Your mother was happy that you were a boy so she could name you Eduardo Ricardo. She even used the same birth certificate that was made for the first Eduardo. Someday I'll show you that your birth certificate is the same one. Your mother changed the dates of birth, of course, but it is the original certificate that was made for your brother, God bless him. You, Eduardo, were a strong baby and you only cried when you were cold or hungry."
