One Well-Stocked Kitchen and BarTHE KITCHEN It all begins with a well-stocked kitchen, the backbone of any home. People frequently ask what is in a well-stocked kitchen and the answer is easythe things you use most. My first apartment was roughly the size of a one-car garage.
I made shelves out of crates since there wasnt a pantry. I kept olive oil, canned tomatoes, pasta, rice, grits (Im Southern), dried beans, canned soups, and basic baking supplies, plus a shoebox with dried herbs and spices on those shelves. The waist-high fridge always had butter, milk, eggs, cheese, assorted condiments, and maybe wine. The point is to designate a placeno matter how tinyto keep what you need. Thats how I started cooking and throwing parties, and this method taught me to ask questions about every recipe I make. Can I get the ingredients at almost any grocery store? Can I substitute something for an ingredient if I dont have it? Can I make this without a lot of equipment and weird techniques? Will the ingredients be practical to use again? If the answer to all four was yes, then I gave the recipe a shot.
Im still doing that. Ive made use what you have my personal motto when following a recipe. It would be terrible to think that being one garlic clove short of a recipes ingredient list would keep someone from making dinner! Stocking a kitchen is basic, but also personal. If you like tuna, keep it on hand; if you use a lot of Indian spices, add those to your spice cabinet. This is the list weve used to stock several kitchens as my son moved into new apartments. It reflects a couple of additions he found necessary after cooking more often.
We personalized the list by adding favorites, like orange juice, deli meats, ground beef, and ice cream. Start a wish list for some appliances you would like to add. We also scoured Goodwill and thrift shops for an iron skillet and some great casserole dishes. Use this list as a starting point, and then make it your own. Happy cooking! Pots and Pans: 2 non-stick skillets (small and large), small and large saucepans with lids, Dutch oven, baking sheet, pie pan, 2 cake pans, 2 casserole dishes (9 x 13 and 8 x 8), bread pan, set of mixing bowls
