La Fiesta de Los Tastoanes: Critical Encounters in Mexican Festival Performance: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "La Fiesta de Los Tastoanes: Critical Encounters in Mexican Festival Performance" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Each year, for three days in September, the citizens of Jocot?n, an ancient indigenous community near Guadalajara, Mexico, symbolically reenact the Spanish conquest of Mexico in mock battles between Santiago, the patron saint of Spain, and the Tastoanes, the leaders of the indigenous resistance. Paradoxically, the Jocote?os honor Santiago, their special protector, and incorporate both Christian and indigenous practices and beliefs in their fiesta. Employing the concept of hegemony, the author explores what the festival means culturally to the community and shows how it enables Jocote?os to adapt to Christianity and to resist the social order it symbolizes. Through the festival, Jocote?os address their collective identity, the preservation of their folk culture, and their relationship to the social-political power structure of Jocot?n. Students of Mexican culture and of syncretic religions worldwide will find this study stimulating and informative.

Acknowledgments
I am deeply indebted to the many people who contributed to this project since its inception over fifteen years ago. In Mexico, I thank the people of Jocotn for allowing me to study their festival and for offering me valuable insights and perspective on the significance of the festival. I am especially grateful to my very special friends in GuadalajaraHector Anaya, Martin Muoz Macias, Luis Mario Fuentes, Luz Maria Alfonso, Lupe and Armando Cornejo, and Lupita Bayardofor opening up their homes and hearts to me during my many visits and for assisting me in countless ways. I also thank Professors Guillermo de la Pea and Ramn Mata Torres for their invaluable visits in the field.
In the United States, I worked on the book at several universities. I have been fortunate in having the constant support, encouragement, and counsel of several colleagues and friends whom I first met at the University of Texas at Austin. Foremost among these are Beverly J. Stoeltje, Jos Limn, Richard Flores, Frances Terry, James Brow, Ramn Saldvar, and, of course, Amrico Paredes. At the University of California at Berkeley, I had the opportunity of working with Stanley Brandes during my tenure as a Chancellor's Ethnic Minority Postdoctoral Fellow. At UC Santa Cruz, I thank my colleagues Hayden White, David Schneider, and Susan Harding for providing comments on earlier incarnations of the manuscript. I am especially grateful to Diane Gifford-Gonzalez, Shelly Errington, Carolyn Martin-Shaw, and Anna Tsing for inviting me to participate in their writing group. It is through them that I met Kathy Chetkovich, whose assistance proved invaluable in revising the manuscript.
Most of all, I thank my family for keeping the faith. My mother deserves

special recognition for enabling me to indulge in the writing process by taking care of my home and my family. I thank my husband Ronaldo and our daughter Elisa for their love and patience; my sisters, Elena and Alicia, for their open hearts and minds; and my brothers Roberto, Martin, and John, and my nieces, Jasmine, Monica, Breena, and Shelly for reminding me of the larger audience for whom I write.
