Authors' Preface
This is the story of one family's struggle with chronic illness. Over a period of three and a half years, doctors discovered that Phil had leukemia, kidney failure, and lymphoma. Our family has faced bone marrow transplant, dialysis, kidney transplant, and chemotherapy.
There is a significant difference between acute illness and chronic illness. In acute illness, the disease is resolved, The patient either recovers or dies. In chronic illness, the affliction may be controlled or in remission; it is never gone. Acute illness demands courage. Chronic illness requires perseverance.
Phil does not remember many of the events that follow. He was too sick. The text printed in italics comes from the journal Joyce kept from 1986 to 1989. Through her journal, Joyce managed and interpreted the stress of those days.
What prompted us to write this book? One motive was selfish. Writing provided us with the opportunity to make sense of chaos.

As Phil's illness progressed, one medical emergency followed another. Unexpected surgeries. Life-threatening infections. Fractured vertebrae. Congestive heart failure. Hypertension. We channeled all our energies into facing the crisis at hand. Time blurred. Fatigue settled in. There were few occasions to step back and reflect.
