Preface
Growing paper collections, expanding technology, new services and programs, and rising user expectations all combine to create more demands on academic library buildings. Increasingly, the solution to the pressing need for more space is being met not by entirely new buildings but by additions to existing buildings.
Many academic institutions planning library building additions seek the "seamless" addition to expand, modify, and enhance an existing structure while creating an environment that is pleasing to the eye as well as one that is accessible, functional, and inviting.
Planning such a seamless architectural solution involves more than enlarging an existing structure. As many librarians know, additions bring with them their own set of issues and concernssite considerations, financial constraints, aesthetics, and function.
Three case studies in this book illustrate how library staffs and architectural design teams can work closely together to plan seamless additions that are successful solutions to building problems.
We are pleased to present this publication that began as a good idea, went on to become a conference program presented at the 1993 Annual Conference of the American Library Association in New Orleans, and has emerged as a title in the LAMA Occasional Paper Series.
