INTRODUCTION
The literature of patron problems in libraries extends back to some of our earliest modern professional literature. Articles have been written detailing specific problems, workshops on problem patrons are a staple of library conferences, and a few books have been published on the subject. The handful of books devoted to patron problems are useful and illuminating, yet no one book has been published which deals with the subject from a broad perspective, with a view to describing the various problems presented by a diverse patron population and prescribing solutions to disruptive patron behavior.
In compiling this book, we gathered a diverse and talented group of librarians to write about the subject with which they are most familiar. We want to offer useful information to public librarians, academic librarians, children's librarians, and special librarians. It is our aim to assist librarians who need help in staff training, in dealing with various types of patron behavior problems, in establishing procedures for handling problems and complaints, and in researching patron problems in libraries.
