PREFACE
The second edition of the Guide for Written Collection Policy Statements derives from the "Guidelines for the Formulation of Collection Development Policies" section of the 1979 work Guidelines for Collection Development and from the first edition of this title issued in 1989. Both of these documents were a response to the needs articulated by the ALA/RTSD Collection Management and Development Committee and its appointed subcommittees.
This new edition is the outgrowth of discussions within the Collection Management and Development Section and its various committees and discussion groups. The Subcommittee sought the advice and comments of a wide variety of persons involved in collection management and development activities, both through invited review and through a public comments session.
All libraries are increasingly called upon by their constituents to describe and justify their collections and the services based on them. Written collection policies provide public documentation of the characteristics of a specific library's collections. The advice and methods in the 1979 and 1989 works had as their primary audience large academic research libraries and did not systematically address the particular needs of public, school, special libraries, and smaller academic libraries. This publication seeks to offer generic advice, collection levels, and language codes that are applicable or adaptable to libraries of all sizes and types.
