INTRODUCTION

A RIZONA. THE NAME ITSELF conjures images of cowboys framed by a Technicolor sunset, towering buttes as a backdrop for forests of saguaros, deep multihued canyons, and a vast sun-scorched land that stretches to the distant horizon under cloudless skies of blue.

Countless cinematic epics are largely responsible for such a romanticized image of the Grand Canyon State. In actuality, Arizona is a land of stunning diversity with but a few short miles separating ski resorts from vast fields of saguaros, and modern metropolises from serene desert wilderness.

Snowcapped peaks, deep forests of majestic ponderosa pines, and alpine meadows are islands in a sea that combines stark lunar landscapes, rocky desert plains scarred by deep canyons, and valleys framed by stony escarpments appearing as ruined battlements on the distant horizon. Azure waterfalls tumble from red rock canyon walls, and the shadows of passing clouds present an ever-changing palette of color as they dance over canyon walls.

The vast natural beauty of Arizona is a suitable stage for a cavalcade of epic history and a backdrop for those historical remnants that remain. As travelers explore the backroads of Arizona, they will discover vestiges of lost civilizations nestled deep in canyon walls and dusty monuments to the dreams of the conquistador. There are monuments to camel caravans, ghost towns forever linked with names such as Wyatt Earp or Doc Holliday, ghost cities transformed into artist colonies, and neon-lit nights along legendary Route 66.

Amply sprinkled amongst the natural beauty and the historic gems are excellent zoos and botanical gardens, restaurants with million-dollar views, and fascinating museums. There are also festivals and rodeos, cultural celebrations, and concerts under a starlit desert sky.

An adventure on the backroads of the Grand Canyon State is a rich tapestry of sounds and color, flavors and culture. With a bit of common senseand a little advance planning to ensure you have a sweater as well as sunscreenit is possible to enjoy Arizona in any season.

I sincerely hope that this book will encourage you to discover the wonders of Arizona, and that those discoveries will entice you to return time and time again.

A strange forest of twisted, spike-topped trees unlike anything on earth gives the Joshua Tree Parkway in northwest Arizona its name.

E VEN THOUGH THE NORTHWEST portion of the state has often been on the forefront of development, it still is a mix between the modern and the frontier era. In spite of explosive growth during the past decade, there are large portions of this area that remain as wilderness, little changed from when the conquistadors first came through this area more than four centuries ago.

Mohave County may be geographically larger than several states, but the population in the northern third of the county is numbered in the thousands. Separating the northern part of the county from the southern part is a raw, rugged land with deep, colorful gorges, including the world-famous Grand Canyon.

With the exception of Kingman, Lake Havasu City, and Bullhead City, the communities in the northwest are, to a large degree, time capsules. In many towns, it feels as if time stopped in the 1950s, while in others, the trappings of that period are but a thin faade covering relics from when this area was a territory and not a state. In the village of Supai, for example, mule trains still bring the mail and most supplies into town.

The longest remaining uninterrupted portion of historic Route 66 crosses northwestern Arizona. As you motor west along this legendary stretch of asphalt, little imagination is required to believe that it is the year 1955, or even 1950, for there is almost nothing to break the illusion, except the passing of a Honda.

Finding adequate words to describe this amazing land is difficult indeed. If, however, I were limited to just two words to describe northwestern Arizona, they would be time capsule.
