Preface
We have wanted to write this book for some time, as the problem of organizational co-dependence has received only scant attention. Yet every time we went back to rewrite and make changes, we fond we had learned so much more that was important to include about this subject. Some writers have looked at alcoholism and other chemical addictions in the workplace. Others have explored the addictive process in organizations and in society at large. We have chosen to limit our discussion to co-dependency because it encompasses more people than do other addictions in that each addicted person has the potential to create several co-dependents.
We have seen a lot of pain and confusion in the workplace caused by co-dependency. Many people have no idea why they are unhappy, just that they are unhappy. Likewise, businesses have some notion that employees are having problems but have not been able to identify and deal with them. We believe that there are steps that can be taken to help both the employee and the organization escape some of the unfortunate effects that can happen to each of them. These begin with an understanding of the problem and then taking measures to correct it.
We have placed most of the focus on Chapter 3, which deals with what we have termed "Organizational Co-Dependency," and on Chapter 10, which discusses "Recovery." Some material about personal recovery used in Chapter 10 we wrote originally for the Personnel Journal and is reprinted here by permission and through an agreement between the authors and that publication.
We hope this book will help some of you either as managers or employees as well as others interested in addictive behavior.

Chapter 1 Introduction
Co-dependency is everywhere today. So it should not come as a surprise when we can find it in modern business organizations. The only really puzzling thing is that it has taken so long to put a label on it, and even more curious is that to a large extent we still do not know what to do about it.
