ACKNOWLEDGMENTS To the incredibly supportive and caring people who stop by and read my blog, Make It and Love It. From the very beginning, I have been astounded by the support, encouragement, and excitement provided by you dear friends. I cant even tell you how fulfilling you have made this strange little world we call blogland for me. Im serious about the all readers welcome party that I want to throw one of these days! To my family and friends who helped me pick between fabric A and B, played tea party with my kids while I finished one last book edit, quickly smiled when I said wed be having cereal for dinner... again, told me it was perfectly okay to let the laundry pile up, and buoyed me up when I needed you most. Thank you all.
To Katherine, who saw a vision for me, bigger than I could have imagined. And wow, how youve encouraged me! To Kristen, who showed an abundant amount of patience for a momma with young children. Every new author needs an editor equally as loving! To Elli, Connor, Chloe, Christine, Lauren, Emma, Jake, and Brielle for modeling your little hearts out for me. You are beautiful people, inside and out! To the creators of those no-sew supplies out there for sale. Its shocking, but you really can do so much without a needle and thread! And lastly, a huge thanks to my loving husband, Steve, for giving me wings to fly and telling me that my dreams are always worth it. and not a single one requires a sewing machine? You got it! I know what youre thinking. and not a single one requires a sewing machine? You got it! I know what youre thinking.
Youre probably wondering if Im being sneaky and have hidden a few steps that suggest using a machine. Or maybe that several projects include at least a bit of hand sewing, with a needle and thread. Go ahead and leaf through the book, Ill wait for you... but you wont find a single thread sewn into any of these projects. In fact, anyone can pick up this book and create the projects inside! And why would they? Because making things with your own two hands brings a great deal of satisfaction, eliciting that lovely Look what I made! feeling. More people are crafting because its fun, and this book will cater to those who are discovering how rewarding it is to make your own stuff, without any sort of sewing involved.
And hey, even if you have a sewing machine, maybe its a pain to pull out. Or youre just plain tired of using it. Maybe it has some setting issues that cause frustrated hair pulling. Grrr... I have so been there! So, leave that machine in its storage case, gather a few universal tools, and let me show you how easy it is to make commonly sewn items sans a sewing machine. Oh, and be prepared for a few impressed looks when you reveal that the new curtain/scarf/pillow you assembled was indeed made by your own two little hands.
And then revel in the look of surprise when you confess that not one single stitch was involved. Gratifying indeed! Just do me one favor. There are projects that cater to different skill levels in this book. Start with the easy ones at first, if need be, but promise me that you wont limit yourself to the simplest just because you dont consider yourself very skilled at crafting. One of my favorite feelings is the delight that comes from trying something that I feel intimidated by and then shocking my own socks right off when I see the results. and youll love it! Do we have a deal? Good. and youll love it! Do we have a deal? Good.
Now, go and have some fun, share your projects with me, and beautify the people and living spaces around you! Ashley
SUPPLY LIST
Many of the projects within this book require the same tools. Instead of listing each of the common (and sometimes basic household) items for every single project, Ive put together a master list here, broken down into three categories. Items listed under The Basics below will be included in a Toolkit list for each project, because I figure youre likely to have them on hand already. Ive also included the types and brands of some of my favorite supplies, which may help you in deciding what to select. You dont have to purchase (or have on hand) every single item listed to begin working on projects, but just keep in mind that the following tools are used fairly often throughout the book. The Basics
RULER You may want several types.
My favorites to have on hand are a clear ruler (helps to see whats going on underneath), a short hem guide ruler (with a slide that adjusts for your desired folded amount of fabric), and a standard 12-inch ruler. FLEXIBLE MEASURING TAPE Flexible measuring tape, often made out of vinyl, is used to measure three-dimensional objects such as a waist, arms, etc. FABRIC SCISSORS Its always best to keep a pair of scissors dedicated to fabric only. This will keep them sharp and will help keep your cutting accurate. PAPER SCISSORS You will need to cut paper at times, so make sure you have a second pair of scissors, separate from the fabric scissors. STRAIGHT PINS SAFETY PINS CLOTHESPINS IRON/IRONING BOARD An iron with a steam setting is necessary for the optimal outcome when using fusible adhesive.
PEN PENCIL PERMANENT MARKER TAILORS CHALK This type of chalk has a fine tip for accurately marking fabric but erases easily. PINKING SHEARS The blades of pinking shears are saw-toothed, which cuts the fabric in a zigzag pattern. When you cut woven fabric on the diagonal, it minimizes fraying tremendously. LIGHTER This will be used to melt ribbon ends. Some may prefer to use a lit candle so that the flame is constant. Just be cautious while working with either option.
