Preface
Sam Bronfman has become a mythic figure in Canadian lifeeven more so in the twenty years after his death than during his long and eventful career. And increasingly, the myth bears less and less relationship to the life itself. It is as if Canadians have found in the creator of the mighty Seagram whisky* empire a board on which to pin their sometimes contradictory feelings about business, power, wealth and perhaps even ethnic politics as well.

Myth-makers would prefer to have Sam Bronfman in the thick of the rum running, driver of getaway cars racing across the American border in the dead of night, or the organizer of armies of bootleggers who operated south of the Canadian border. In fact, Sam and his brothers kept basically within the framework of Canadian law, nestled comfortably in the loopholes of provincial and federal regulations as they supplied American bootleggers
