Acknowledgments
Preparation of a book such as this clearly would have been impossible without the kind cooperation of many persons, and to them we are sincerely grateful. For the first edition of this book, we owe a special debt of gratitude to the entire staff of Weeks Memorial Library in Lancaster for their assistance, patience, and trust. Also deserving of special appreciation are Bill and Iris Baird of Lancaster; Joe and Virginia Richardson of Lancaster; Edna Whyte of Lancaster; Glenn J. Ackroyd of Gorham; Elaine D. Adjutant of Ossipee; Barbara Berry of Wolfeboro Falls; Samuel I. Bowditch of Tucson, Arizona, and Chocorua; George E. Brixton of Wolfeboro; Marjorie E. Broad of Campton; Mrs. C. L. Dodge of Lisbon; Alfred L. Dowden of Ossipee; Donald A. Lapham of Wolfeboro; James Mykland of Center Sandwich; Richard Roberts of Woodstock, Connecticut; Chilton Thomson of Cleveland, Ohio; and Frederic L. Steele of the White Mountain School in Littleton. We are also grateful to Peter E. Randall and Walter Wright for their assistance with the original manuscript.
But since the book was originally published in 1980, and during our revision, we have become indebted to numerous other persons for their knowledge and goodwill. These persons include: Wilbur Willey, historian, Littleton Area Historical Society; Roger Payne, Chief, Branch of Geographic Names, Domestic Geographic Names, U.S. Geological Survey; and Rebecca E. Oreskes and other personnel with the White Mountains National Forest. We are especially grateful to Douglass P. Teschner, without whose encouragement this present book likely would not have happened.

How to Use This Book
This book contains approximately 650 names, listed alphabetically according to their specific term, not their generic (or their directional, or their indicator of size). Thus Mount Washington is under Washington, Mount; South Carter is under Carter, South; Big Attitash is under Attitash. This book also contains extensive cross-referencing. Where there have been name changes, previous names are cross-referenced to the present name; names with variants are cross-referenced to the most commonly accepted variant (if one exists); and if any confusion exists as to what name is current or what variant is accepted, we have chosen the form approved by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (USBGN), as listed in the U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) Phase I inventory. Italicized place names in the text indicate that an entry will be found for it elsewhere.
We have not included guides to pronunciation, except where the locally accepted pronunciation is different from what a speaker of standard English would expect. Thus we have noted that Berlin locally is pronounced BURR-lin and not like the city in Germany.
