PREFACE
I would be less than honest if I did not report there were times when I despaired of ever completing this manuscript. Perhaps that is one of the pitfalls of a longitudinal study. More likely, juggling babies, data, intermittent financial backing, household chores and mounds of typing just got to me on particular days. I often feared the information I had to share would become outdated before I could get it into print, or public schools would change and women would reach parity with male administrators in the fieldall rendering my book too late to be of help to anyone. But at various gatherings over the years, I would meet one more stranger who would assure me otherwise. After hearing about my work, someone would tell me about another woman's administrative application being discounted merely because of her gender. Apparently the echoes of, "we just couldn't go with a woman," have yet to subside in the public school system. Although I was always saddened to hear such tales, they spurred me on to finish. This is the story, then, of women all over the country in search of school districts willing to "go with a woman."
