Contents Introduction T his book has been a true labor of love. For more than four years now, Ive dedicated my website, Creative Green Living, to helping moms and dads make healthier lifestyle choices that are both beautiful and delicious. British food icon Jamie Oliver once called the idea that healthy food is boring or tasteless rubbish, and I couldnt agree more. After looking through and sampling some the recipes in this book, I hope youll agree. Each of these recipes is designed to be both nourishing and deliciousand nice to look at, too! Although healthy food that tastes delicious has been a personal passion of mine for years, I wanted to make sure this book would bring you more perspectives and taste palates than my own.
As such, I partnered with some of the best healthy food bloggers and Instagrammers worldwide when assembling this book. Photos and recipes for their beautiful smoothie bowls appear throughout these pages. If a recipe is not my own, its clearly marked with the name of its creator at the top of the page with more information about her below the recipe itself. I dont claim to have a monopoly on beautiful, healthy food, and I encourage you to follow these women on their sites and Instagrams so that you can be inspired by healthy food daily. And while youre at it, be sure to follow me on Instagram as both @CreativeGreenLiving and @CreativeGreenKitchen. to check out the recipe contributor credits and see the full list of contributors and read more about them! How to Use This Book Im a firm believer that anyone who can both safely use a knife and operate a blender can make a beautiful smoothie bowl. If youre a beginner, be sure to read the chapters before the actual recipes for your crash course in Smoothie Bowls 101youll be a smoothie bowl pro in no time! Every recipe in this book is gluten friendly so if you have celiac or a gluten sensitivity, youre in luck! Now, the gluten friendliness of the recipes only goes as far as the ingredients you choose. This means that for recipes that include oats, granola, cereal, or any other prepackaged item, you will want to be sure to read the labels and choose gluten-free options and foods that were not processed in facilities that also process wheat if you have a true gluten allergy or intolerance. If you arent sensitive to gluten, of course, you can choose any variety of these products that you wishalthough I recommend choosing organic whenever possible.
This is in large part because some nonorganic farmers use glyphosate (a.k.a. Round Up), an herbicide, in the preparation of their oats and other grains for harvest. Side of Round Up with your smoothie? No thanks! Glyphosate is not permitted in organic agriculture, so thats just one more reason I choose organic as much as possible. To help you easily find recipes that match your personal dietary preferences, I have labeled each recipe with the applicable labels here: Vegan: Recipe contains no animal-derived ingredients. You will find fifty recipes with this label, although the remaining thirty are easily adapted to a vegan lifestyle by substituting coconut yogurt for dairy yogurt, plant milk for dairy milk, and agave syrup for honey. One recipe contains gelatin, but its just as delicious when you leave that ingredient out (or try it with ground chia or flaxseed instead!).
All the recipes except the one containing gelatin are vegetarian. Paleo: Recipe that meets the requirements for most people living a paleo lifestyle. These recipes will not contain any grains, dairy, or highly processed foods, but may contain maple syrup or honey. Recipes containing agave are not labeled as paleo, but in most instances, honey or maple syrup make an excellent paleo substitute. Of the forty-one recipes labeled as paleo, thirty-seven also meet the requirements for Whole 30what many people would describe as an extreme version of paleo. Gluten Free: Recipe as-written does not use gluten-containing ingredients. Gluten Free: Recipe as-written does not use gluten-containing ingredients.
If you are gluten sensitive, you are still responsible for selecting appropriate gluten-free ingredients for prepackaged goods like granola, oats, and cereals that may contain gluten or have been cross-contaminated during the packaging process.
