WELCOME TO OUR TEST KITCHEN
Back in 1928, the editors of Better Homes and Gardens opened the state-of-the-art Better Homes and Gardens Testing-Tasting Kitchen to create and evaluate recipes to be published. It was the first in-house test kitchen of its kind, located steps from the editorial offices of the magazine in downtown Des Moines. It was a modern workshop as near as possible in size and equipment to what you would find in a real home, BH&G editors wrote in a 1929 feature.
Its been almost 90 years since our first culinary specialist tied on an apron. Today were called the BH&G Test Kitchen, and 60,000-plus recipes have passed our standards to be printed in our magazines and cookbooks, including our famed Red Plaid Cookbookofficially known as the Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book .
Our kitchen has been remodeled and updated many times, but one thing remains: We fail so you dont. We anticipate any difficult spots home cooks might encounter so we can make our recipes foolproof. Were not a chefs kitchen outfitted with top-of-the-line professional equipmentwe make every effort to use the same everyday tools and appliances that you use at home. And were not a group of classically trained chefs in white coats. Our backgrounds varyamong us are registered dietitians, culinary-school grads, and home economists. We cook all day, but we still go home and cook for our families. We may test and taste eight chocolate cakes (someone has to do it!) to come up with the very best one. Its the same cake we make for our own families.
Bottom line: We do everything we can in our kitchen to make sure every recipe is delicious, practical, and reliable in your kitchen.
We made 100 Recipes Youll Make Forever so that youll have a foolproof collection of the very best recipes, tested and retested, to make sure you get perfect results every time. Want to make cookies that are crunchy on the outside but chewy inside? Or roasted vegetables that are seared just right? Those answers and more are in the pages of this book. Its a stellar collection that includes the best versions of classics as well as modern favorites. Rigorous testing, tasting, and tweakingplus our favorite tips and techniquesensures not only that a recipe will work the first time you make it, but that youll make it again and again.
So welcome to our Test Kitchen! We know youll enjoy making these recipes as much as we enjoyed the process of perfecting them. Happy cooking!
The Test Kitchen seal assures you that every recipe tested in the Better Homes and Gardens Test Kitchen is practical and reliable, and meets our high standards of taste appeal.
Part of our cooking legacy at Better Homes and Gardens is the famed Red Plaid New Cook Book (currently in its 16th edition). This book is at the heart of everything we do in the Test Kitchen. Every new kitchen discovery we make is added to this book. Every new flavor and twist on the classics lands in its pages.
