Dedication
I dedicate this book to my beloved mother, who in
stilled in me an adventurous spirit, a love of the road
and a can-do attitude. I wish she were still here to
share one more drive in West Texas.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Over the years I have traveled far and wide in this world, from the Strait of Magellan to the Arctic Circle, from the Himalayas of Nepal to the outback of Australia, but no place is more beautiful to me than Texas. I have crisscrossed the state, from the Piney Woods to the Chihuahua Desert, from our canyons of steel to our country towns, and I never fail to be awed by the tapestry of towns and terrain. However, I must admit to a prejudice, rooted in my growing-up years in the Panhandle: I love the vast open country of West Texas, where sweeping vistas of the plains, the desert and the mountains meld into the huge sky. Newcomers sometimes see it as desolate country and ''boring nothingness," but to me the immensity of the land and sky evokes a great sense of freedom, of inspiration, of connection to the past and future. I feel as one with the Indians, the Spanish explorers and the pioneers. We all are part of the caravans of life that have crossed this land, leaving imprints but not really changing its ageless grandeur. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to set off on a driving trip somewhere in Texas. It's always a journey of discovery and renewal of the spirit.
This book in particular led me to numerous little-known treasures in distinctive lodging for romantic getaways. For those who want luxury and sophistication, they will find it not only in the cities but also in the remotest reaches of the state. Texas also boasts a wealth of historic accommodations that capture the flavor of a community, ranging from antebellum homes in Jefferson to German "Sunday houses" in Fredericksburg and ranches and cattle-baron hotels of West Texas. This is a personal selection of romantic getaways, not an end-all guide but a key to the beginning of discoveries. I encourage readers to enjoy the places I have chosen, then explore and find treasures on their ownand let me know about them.
I give a hearty thanks to the many tourism officials and representatives of the attractions, accommodations and restaurants for answering all my questions and providing information. I owe a special thanks to publisher Michael Hunter for his patience and understanding as personal events caused delays in production of this book. Now, let's go about romancing Texas!
