To My Dear and Loving Husband
If ever two were one, then surely we.
If ever man were loved by wife, then thee;
If ever wife was happy in a man,
Compare with me, ye women, if you can.
I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold
Or all the riches that the East doth hold.
My love is such that rivers cannot quench,
Nor ought but love from thee, give recompense.
Thy love is such I can no way repay,
The heavens reward thee manifold, I pray.
Then while we live, in love let's so persevere
That when we live no more, we may live ever.
Anne Bradstreet, 1678

Preface
She Said
After growing up just six minutes apart by car, and probably sitting across the field on opposing sides with our high school football teams, we finally met. A friend asked, ''How would you like a blind date with that handsome fellow who wins sailboat races all summer long?" I would, and soon found myself crewing for him. Sponging out the boat after a race wasn't the most romantic bit, but going out as a couple with other sailors led to lifelong friendships, still very much alive after 47 years.
We were separated as he finished his last three years in college. I made a whirlwind trip east over Thanksgiving for a visit, missing classes at my university, but who cares? Every summer we sailed and dated like mad until he went back to college. I flew east again to his commencement and then went on to Europe for a long student tour, hoping for a letter from him at every stop. Soon after my return, I answered the front door with my hair in curlers and was aghast to find him there; he wanted to surprise me.
He had driven around the lake several times confirming his choice to ask me to become "pinned," using a large safety pin until the real one arrived. Then he flew off to head for Japan on a Navy ship and we continued our courtship by mail. A beautiful carved teak chest from Hong Kong arrived during the year and filled up with needlework placemats and other pieces for our future home.
As newlyweds, we arrived back after a romantic skiing honeymoon, bought groceries, walked back up the hill to our apartment, and found that we had exactly two cents left. We just laughed. That year, still in the Navy but now at Annapolis, was one to remember. We didn't have a car, walked nearly everywhere, and sailed much of Chesapeake Bay on Naval Academy yawls. At night we would run hand-in-hand through our alley to the foreign film theater on the main street.

I also remember running along hard-packed sand by the sea and scrambling up over rocks, then being carried out laughing and dunked in cold water. He had sailed a Naval Academy yawl to Bermuda in the 1954 race and I flew down to meet him there for a second honeymoon. There have been many more romantic expeditions so many that I have lost count. I remember adventures either alone or with other couples - portaging canoes into a Canadian lake we had entirely to ourselves, cruising the Maine coast for the first time, camping throughout Europe in our tiny Simca.
Years have passed, busy with children, teaching, and writing. Now we are writing this book together, our eighth travel guide with shared authorship. It's not been just another deadline because we've taken the chance to enjoy some candlelit dinners again, just the two of us. The locations we have picked for you are not new to us, but we are looking at them with different eyes. Most of our work has been historic and sometimes quite detailed, yet now we are relishing the wonderful freedom of moving about together in beautiful settings.
